India went on to lose the opening game of the five-match ODI series by 24 runs to New Zealand but Virat Kohli, maintaining his brilliant form, scored his 18th century, becoming the fastest batsman in the world to reach the milestone in 119 innings, bettering Sourav Ganguly's feat of reaching the milestone after 174 innings.

# Rahul Dravid (123 not out at Taupo on January 9, 1999) and Kohli now share an Indian record for the highest individual innings in a losing cause vs New Zealand in ODIs.
